Caring for workers

Vice President Jejomar C. Binay wants the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to intensify efforts in checking cases of employers hiring people as domestic helpers but employing them for business purposes following the death of eight people in a fire that razed a warehouse in Pasay City last Friday. Binay learned that the victims were allegedly hired as domestics but made to work at the warehousing business of their employer. Binay was able to meet with the families of the fire victims at the Veronica Funeral Homes. He was told that the reason why the victims died in the fire was because they were kept in a locked room. “Mukha yatang marami na naman ang bumabalik sa hindi tamang pagtrato sa manggagawa. Kailangang maaksiyunan ito para huwag na sanang maulit,” Binay said. (JC Bello Ruiz)

Grand Lotto pot may reach P111 M

The P106-million jackpot for the Grand Lotto 6/55 draw last Monday eluded thousands of bettors, the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) said yesterday. The PCSO said not one of the 1,597,878 bets placed hit the winning numbers combination of 11-54-18-44-09-36 for the draw which carried a jackpot of P105,863,504. But the PCSO said 11 bettors won P145,260 each for guessing at least five of the numbers drawn for the Grand Lotto 6/55 on June 2. The PCSO projects the jackpot of today’s Grand Lotto 6/55 draw to reach P111 million.  The Grand Lotto remains the producer of the Philippines’ biggest jackpot of P741.17 million won on November 29, 2010 by a 60-year-old Filipino working in the United States.
