No Boy Abunda in the 2016 polls
TV host Boy Abunda has withdrawn his plans to run for public office in the 2016 national elections.
Last year, the influential showbiz personality expressed his “openness” to run for the gubernatorial position in his Eastern Samar hometown. He said he’s reached a point of his life where he has to give back.
In an interview with Pep, published over the weekend, Abunda admitted to changing his mind due to the condition of his ailing mom Licerna. For now, the 58-year-old wants to focus taking care of his mother.
“Hangga’t inaalagaan ko ang nanay, ‘yun ang priority ko. Everything else comes second” he said.
“Siguro nga binibigyan din ako ng Diyos ng pagkakataon na, ‘Ay, eto ang priorities mo.’ Hindi pwede, e. Lalo na sa state ngayon ni nanay na para bagang in her twilight years.”
Abunda also cited other reasons for his change of heart, among them his “disappointments” over the supposed “corruption” in the government, citing the multi-billion pork barrel scams and other such issues with public funds.
Abunda, who comes from a family of politicians, admits that to join the fray “takes a lot of courage.”
He said, “‘Yun ang pagkatao para hindi ka malamon. Oo, nakakatakot din kaya sa pamilya ko, ako lang ang wala sa pulitika, ‘di ba?”
He nevertheless has nothing but praise for President Noynoy Aquino, saying, “When I look at the president, he’s the most honest president we have had. He’s hardworking, parang he dedicated his life to this country, tapos kung babatikusin? ”
The decision to run for public office is something not to be taken lightly, and Abunda himself has put a lot of thought to it. Considering he would get his share of criticisms, he said, “Ang tanong, ‘Kaya mo ba yun?’ Parang, is it worth it at this point in my life when I have a mother to take care of?”
He also has his showbiz career to consider.
“Parang ‘Am I willing to give up my more than 20 years in this business for a career na babatikusin lang ako kahit napakaganda ng aking intensyon?’ Ang dami mong iniisip na ganoon,” he shared.
