Fight between two FAMAS entities continue

The fight between two entities claiming to be the “real” FAMAS (Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences) continues to this day. In an urgent press release sent to us by FAMAS Pres. Art M. Padua, he decried the claim of the Jimmy Tiu group to be the only “legitimate body to conduct the FAMAS annual awards.”
It is recalled that last year’s 56th Annual FAMAS Awards rites were held in Nov. 29, 2008 at the Manila Hotel, wherein Senator Jinggoy Estrada was adjudged Best Actor and Ms. Lorna Tolentino, Best Actress. Padua bewailed the methods used by the Tiu group which held the Maria Clara Awards in 2007, “to mislead the public and former President Joseph Estrada, thus confusing both.”
Padua cited a Supreme Court decision denying the petition of Jimmy Tiu for review of his request to declare his (Tiu’s) group the correct association.
The Supreme Court decision said “Petitioner Tiu failed to adduce competent evidence of affiant’s identity in the service of the petition in violation of Sections 3 and 5, Rule 45, Section 5 (d), Rule 56 and Section 13, in relation to Sections 6 and 12, Rule 11 of the 2004 Rules on Notarial Practice.”
“It’s a pity that certain parties thereof closed their eyes to the said SC decision. If truth be told, Tiu’s FAMAS is not an acronym of Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences, it is just a word,” Padua said. He bared that his group is now screening films for the 57th FAMAS Awards to be held in June 2009.
The officers and members of FAMAS, Padua said, are Art M. Padua, president; Sonny Chico, 1st VP, Junne Quintana, 2nd VP, Elvira Gonzales, secretary; Pit Maliksi, asst. secretary; Juan Asuncion, treasurer, Edgard Godin, asst. treasurer, Dennis Aguilar, auditor; Vir Mateo, PRO, Prodie Padios, Efren Motano, marshall; Rudy Contillo, asst. marshall. Legal counsel is Atty. Raul Lambino. Board of directors are Ninoy Sofranes, Co. Apolonio Reyes, Cles Rambaud, Wilberto S. Villamin, Larry Dominguez, Angelo Padua and Danny Valdes.
On the other hand, the officers of the Tiu FAMAS group are Col. Jimmy Tiu, president; Chit Sambile, 1st VP; Dr. Mario Yap, 2nd VP; Mildred Pasco, secretary; Dr. Arnold de Vera, treasurer; Adolfo Sangalang, auditor; Nap Alip, PRO, and Sonny Cabedo, marshall.
Their board of directors are Charlie Arcega, Salvador Almario, Ramses Aseron, Rody Pisuena Boy Silverio, Concordia Evia and Fe Aguinaldo. Their induction is scheduled for tomorrow, March 14, at the Golden Fortune Rest. along T. M. Kalaw St., with former Pres. Joseph Estrada as inducting officer.
The induction coincides with the signing of contract for its exclusive TV coverage under Tess Celestino’s Airtime Production.
Tiu’s group claims that the Securities and Exchange Commission has recently chosen and declared their group as the legitimate body to conduct the FAMAS Annual Awards henceforth. At that, no other group is authorized to use the acronym FAMAS.
Aside from Col. Jimmy Tiu, previous FAMAS presidents who have supported the body are Chit Sambile, Charlie Arcega, Joe Lad Santos, the late Tony Robles and Rudy Ner Songco.
