Aklan prepares for 2010 regional sports meet
KALIBO, Aklan — The provincial government of Aklan is keen to develop the 6.5-hectare Aklan Calangcang Sports Complex in Makato town, for the hosting of the regional athletic competition in 2010. Provincial Engr. Victory Fernandez said the funding for the construction of the sports complex would be taken from the P55 million loan of the provincial government from the Land Bank of the Philippines. “The sports facility will rise in the 10-hectare lot in Barangay Calangcang in Makato, Aklan.
It will be ready by the first quarter of 2010 to host the regional competition for athletes in Western Visayas,” he said. It was gathered that the sports complex features the P35 million rubberized track and field oval, P20 million Olympic-size swimming pools and 5,000-seat main grandstand for the staging of the weeklong Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) meet next year.
Fernandez said the construction would be in full swing starting this April once the provincial government finalized the partnership with the Aklan State University. Future plans, Fernandez said, call for development of other sports facilities and amenities for an estimated P200 million budget to finish the construction of a modern
sports complex.
