Bishops, senators hold forum today on CARP extension and reforms
The Bishops-Senators Forum on the issue of the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program with extension and reforms (CARPER) will finally take place on Monday at 3pm in the Office of Senate President in Pasay City.
Caritas Manila executive director Fr. Anton Pascual said the "top-level dialogue" is actually a continuation of the March 6 meeting between President Arroyo and Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales and Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal in Malacañang.
Pascual, who organized the forum, said among the topics that will be tackled during the dialogue are the passage of Senate Bill 2666, the land acquisition, distribution and funding provisions, and the junking of the Joint Resolution No. 19 of Congress.
Among the bishops who will attend the dialogue are Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines National Secretariat for Social Action Justice and Peace (CBCP-NASSA) chairman Bishop Broderick Pabillo, Caloocan Bishop Deogracias Iniguez,CBCP-Episcopal Commission on Social Communication chairman Bishop Bernardino Cortez, Cabanatuan Bishop Sofronio Bancud, Bontoc-Lagawe Bishop Emeritus Francisco Claver, Novaliches Bishop Emeritus Teodoro Bacani, Catarman Bishop Emmanuel Trance, Infanta Bishop Rolando Tirona, Paranaque Bishop Jesse Mercado and Imus Bishop Luis Antonio Tagle.
Senators will be led by Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, Gregorio Honasan, Francis Pangilinan, Miguel Zubiri, Panfilo Lacson, Richard Gordon, Rodolfo Biazon, Jose "Jinggoy" Estrada, Anna Consuelo ‘’Jamby’’ Madrigal, Francis "Chiz" Escudero and Manuel "Mar" Roxas.
Also attending the dialogue are the leaders of farmers’ groups and representatives of non-governmental organizations that are supportive of the farmers cause.
"We really hope that the problem of farmers will finally be resolved and that their dream to have their own land to till will be granted," Pascual said.
