A Filipino-Canadian, Mable Elmore, born in 1969 in Fort Langley, British Columbia (BC), in Canada, made history on May 12 after being elected to the Legislative Assembly.

Before her foray in the political arena, Elmore, a former bus driver with the regional transit system in BC for 10 years, was known in her community as an activist and human rights advocate.

“It’s an honor to represent the people of Vancouver-Kensington. And I’m also looking forward to bringing a Filipino-Canadian perspective to the legislature,” Elmore said after taking her oath of office on June 8, with the Filipino community putting up a dinner celebrating her victory.

Belonging to the New Democrats, she got 9,930 votes, making her the representative of her constituency in Vancouver-Kensington in BC, which is the 15th largest metropolitan region in Canada.

The Filipina’s nearest rival had 7,678 votes.

“I am really looking forward to standing up for my constituents on the issues that matter to them.

Especially in tough economic times, people need a strong voice in Victoria,” Elmore said.

Victoria is BC’s capital.
