Jayjay wins MVP plum

Barangay Ginebra’s Jayjay Helterbrand bagged his first PBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) trophy, becoming only the second player of the franchise to win the coveted individual award during the annual Leo Awards last night at the Araneta Coliseum.

The 6-foot-1 Helterbrand, who was third in the Statistical Points with 30.6 SPs, garnered a total of 3,220 points from the combined SP and votes, to beat Burger King wingman Arwind Santos (733) and shooting guard Dondon Hontiveros of San Miguel Beer (650).

Helterbrand, who won the Best Player of the Conference last week, got 1,651 votes from media, 231 from players, 600 from TV coveror Solar Sports and 300 from the PBA Office.He joined teammate Eric Menk (2004-05) as the only other Ginebra player to win the MVP plum.

The Ginebra point guard joined Mark Cardona of Talk ’N Text, Jay Washington of SMB, Asi Taulava of Coca-Cola and Santos in the Mythical First Team. (Waylon Galvez)
