4th suspect in priest slay falls
Talisay City, Cebu – Police Thursday arrested in a Cebu island the fourth and last suspect in the robbery-slay of a Catholic priest here, successfully ending two days of pursuit operations to bring all the suspects behind bars.
Elements of the San Francisco Police, together with the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) in Region 7 and the Talisay City Police, arrested Jonas Turawan, 21, outside a relative’s house in Sitio Pajo, Barangay Unidos in San Francisco, Camotes Island.
Turawan was tagged as the one who grabbed the bag and mobile phone of Fr. Jovencio Rabusa, 46, before the priest was shot dead allegedly by Russell Ravanes during the robbery Monday night at the Talisay side of the South Road Properties.
San Francisco police chief Supt. Eduard Saavedra said Turawan’s name surfaced following the arrest of two other suspects and the surrender of the 15-year-old boy who admitted acting as lookout during the incident. Saavedra said the suspect did not resist and calmly surrendered to the police.
Talisay City Police Chief Henry Biñas said they are preparing the criminal charges against the four and hopefully file the charges Friday. Biñas said he was happy that all four are under police custody.
Biñas said the 15-year-old boy will be charged despite a current law that bars criminal charges against minor offenders to enable the court to order the rehabilitation of the young suspect.
Meanwhile, Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 Director Lani-o Nerez Thursday said the officers involved in the early resolution of the case will be duly recognized during the flag raising ceremony at the PRO 7 headquarters on Monday.
Fr. Rabusa was walking at the South Road Properties in Barangay Cansojong, Talisay City past 8 p.m. on Monday when he was blocked by the suspects. The robbers shot him thrice when he refused to hand over his two old mobile phones.
