Aside from it being home to the talented and the beautiful, showbiz is a breeding ground for bickering among its denizens.

The exchange of conflicting statements between Katrina Halili and Dr. Vicki Belo is a case in point. Another is Richard Gutierrez’s libel suit against Philippine Entertainment Portal (PEP).

Listing all quarrels in showbiz may easily come to a thick novel. Still, Manila Bulletin Online has selected some of the most unforgettable clashes that rocked local Hollywood.

Joey de Leon vs. Willie Revillame

As hosts of competing noontime TV shows “Eat Bulaga” and “Wowowee,” Joey de Leon and Willie Revillame have a history of trading barbs veiled as jokes (sometimes).

The height of such an exchange came in August 2008 when Willie had to defend himself from accusations that the Wilyonaryo portion in “Wowowee” was rigged. Joey was one of the more vocal people to castigate Willie.

“Pinepersonal ho ako ni Joey De Leon eh… Lagi mo akong tinitira, araw-araw,” bemoaned the “Wowowee” host on air. Not the type to turn the other cheek, Joey answered back in “Eat Bulaga.”

The battle reached a ceasefire a few months later when the two saw each other at a showbiz event.

"Wala! Hindi naman kami nag-aaway nito!" a laughing Joey informed when put on the spot.

“Lambingan lang naman namin yung sa TV," agreed Willie. "Akala n'yo, ganoon lang, nag-aaway kami, hindi ho, yun ay patutsadahan lang, lambingan. Si Mr. Joey de Leon, I admire this guy so much. Maliit pa lang ho ako, nasa telebisyon na siya. Siya ang ginagaya ko.’

The two have since seemingly buried the hatchet, although of course with their sharp wit, one can never really tell.

Nadia Montenegro vs. Cristy Fermin

Retired actress Nadia and entertainment reporter Cristy collided over a simple misunderstanding that ended up in court.

It began when Nadia identified Cristy as the mastermind behind the actress’ rift with Gretchen Barretto. Nadia said Cristy told Gretchen lies which caused their falling out.

“Tahasan ko pong sasabihin na sinungaling na siya ay inconsistent pa,” Cristy said of Nadia’s claims.

 Nadia responded that it’s Cristy who is prone to lying. The actress reminded the reporter of a libel case filed against her [Cristy] by the Gutierrezes.

“You have no more credibility. After nito [ay] sisiraan niya pa rin ako siguro dahil wala nang budhi si Cristy Fermin,” said Nadia.

Cristy retaliated by involving Nadia’s children into the fray. She said that the actress secretly gave birth to one of her children so that she could later make it appear that the kid was adopted.

Nadia eventually filed a complaint against Cristy at the Movie Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) for "malicious and slanderous deed."

Thereafter, ABS-CBN asked Cristy to file a leave of absence from her show, “The Buzz.”

The fiasco happened in October 2008 and up to now, Fermin has not been recalled to the show.

Rosanna Roces vs. Lolit Solis and Vicki Belo

Rosanna Roces’s word war with former manager, Lolit Solis and friend, Dr. Vicki Belo took place in 2004.

Rosanna blamed the two for spreading rumors about her daughter being pregnant. In a huff, Rosanna left the GMA-7 show, “Startalk” which she co-hosted with Solis.  The actress also severed her endorsement ties with Belo.

In response, Belo sued Rosanna for publicly questioning the beauty doctor's credentials as a dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon. The case was junked in 2007.

"I still believe that justice will prevail,” Rosanna said after the decision was served. “Ako na nga ang naagrabyado hindi lang sa pera, kundi pati pagkatao ko ay nilait nila. Ang mas masahol pa ay idinamay nila ang anak ko. Iyan ang hindi ko na palalampasin."

Rosanna, Lolit and Vicki have not reconciled to this day.

Barretto vs. Barretto

It was never really clear what started their family’s ‘tampuhan,’ but in 2005, showbiz witnessed how Gretchen Barretto became estranged from her family, specifically sisters Marjorie and Claudine.

From Gretchen having a misunderstanding with her mother, Inday, to a tiff with Marjorie and then husband Dennis, the media had a field day speculating what caused the Barrettos to wage battle among themselves.

The “war” climaxed when Gretchen did not attend sister Claudine’s wedding to Raymart Santiago.

A couple of years later, Claudine and Gretchen moved towards smoking the peace pipe after they bumped into and talked to each other inside a grocery store.

Today, the sisters are A-Okay.

GMA-7 vs. Angel Locsin

GMA-7 and Angel Locsin had a falling out in 2007 when Angel did not renew her contract with the network but instead, transferred to rival TV station, ABS-CBN.

This, after GMA-7 gave Angel her biggest TV hits including “Mulawin” and “Darna.”

Angel’s camp claimed it was the actress’s right to choose her career path GMA-7 contested that and HOW it was done. 

"We are really shocked and saddened by what she did after all we’ve done for her. We built her up, we nurtured her career, but we’re shocked that she treated us this way. We were the last two know about her real intentions," informed Wilma Galvante, GMA-7’s Senior Vice President for Entertainment.

Still, Locsin stuck to her guns and became a full-fledged “Kapamilya.”

“Sinabi ko po na kung ano yung naging desisyon ko, paninindigan ko. Tatanggapin ko po nang buong-buo yung mangyayari sa akin,” the actress said.

Nowadays, no mention of Angel Locsin will be tolerated in all of GMA-7 shows.
