Jose Rizal University coach Ariel Vanguardia is determined to end the school’s 37-year NCAA title drought this season that he always reminds his boys to take each game seriously, even against a guest team like Arellano University.

Though the Bombers are one of the hottest teams in the league right now, Vanguardia doesn’t want to fall into a false sense of security when the Bombers collide with Chiefs Wenesday at 2 p.m. at The Arena in San Juan City.

“I always tell my players to show respect to all the opponents we will face. And Arellano is no exception,” said Vanguardia, whose squad is gunning for a solo lead.

The Bombers are currently tied with San Sebastian College on top with similar 3-0 cards. Vanguardia said the Chiefs are no pushovers.

“Arellano is a veteran team in terms of being together as a team for the longest time. We actually lost to them in the finals of the Fr. Martins Cup two years ago with the same roster so we know how capable they can play as a unit,” said Vanguardia, whose team is coming off a 83-69 thrashing of Emilio Aguinaldo last Friday.

In the other seniors’ game at 4 p.m., cellar-dweller Perpetual Help takes on newcomer Angeles University Foundation.

The Altas are aiming for their first win after dropping their first three matches while the Great Danes seek to improve on their 1-2 card.

The Chiefs have already shown they can pull off an upset when they defeated Letran, 81-73, last July 1. They, however, lost their last outing, 74-102, at the hands of three-peat champion San Beda College.

“I just told them to focus on the game and forget that loss to San Beda,” Arellano mentor Junjie Ablan, said.
