'Harry Potter' weaves magic at North American box office

LOS ANGELES, July 20, 2009 (AFP) - The latest big-screen adventures of boy wizard Harry Potter cast a spell over the North American box office this weekend, final figures showed Monday.

"Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince", the sixth movie adapted from J.K. Rowling's best-selling books, earned 77.8 million dollars in the Friday-to-Sunday period for a total haul of 158 million since Wednesday, according to box office tracker Exhibitor Relations.

The film, which sets the scene for the looming final battle between Harry and his nemesis Lord Voldemort in the concluding films, melted any hopes for the animated heroes of "Ice Age: Return of the Dinosaurs," which finished as a runner-up for a second consecutive week, with 17.6 million dollars in receipts.

Holding in third place was "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," Michael Bay's sequel to the first Transformers movie in 2007, which earned 13.7 million dollars in its fourth week, for a huge total of 363.8 million dollars.

Slipping from top spot to fourth was "Bruno," the raunchy adult comedy "mockumentary" starring Sacha Baron Cohen as a gay Austrian fashionista, which drew 8.3 million dollars.

In fifth place was "The Proposal," a romantic comedy starring Sandra Bullock as a pushy boss who marries her assistant to get a US visa. It earned 8.3 million dollars.

Former number one "The Hangover," a raucous comedy about the fallout from a Las Vegas bachelor party, was sixth, earning 8.2 million dollars for a six-week total of 235.7 million.

"Public Enemies," starring Johnny Depp as notorious US gangster John Dillinger, slipped three spots to seventh, pulling in 7.7 million dollars in its third week in theaters.

Holding at eighth was "Up," Pixar's hugely successful animated feature which tells the story of a grumpy old man who finds adventure in Latin America.

In its eighth week in theaters, the movie earned 3.2 million dollars, bringing its earnings to date to 279.6 million dollars.

Ninth place was held by family drama "My Sister's Keeper," starring Cameron Diaz, which earned 2.8 million dollars in its fourth week.

Rounding out the top 10 was "I Love You, Beth Cooper," a teen coming-of-age comedy starring Hayden Panettiere as a popular high school girl wooed by a nerd, which earned 2.76 million.
