University of Santo Tomas coach Pido Jarencio sees something positive about his team despite its convincing loss to Ateneo during an early battle of unbeaten squads in the UAAP basketball tournament.
The Blue Eagles breezed through the Growling Tigers last Sunday, 93-77, but Jarencio believes the score did not reflect the true capability of his team.
"Sabi ng iba nung simula, hindi kami makakaabot ng Final Four pero sa ngayon pakiramdam namin pwede kaming maging dark horse this season," said Jarencio.
In Sunday's loss, UST allowed Ateneo to shoot 49 percent from the field and 11-of-24 treys, six of which came from 5-6 point guard Eman Monfort who made his shots during wide open situations.
The Blue Eagles' win came big despite limiting reigning Most Valuable Player Rabeh Al-Hussaini to just 13 points and four rebounds as the Ateneo star spent just 21 minutes on the floor because of foul trouble.
"Maganda ang depensang ipinakita namin kay Al-Hussaini. Ang problema, nakalimutan naming bantayan yung ibang players nila," said Jarencio.
"Kung hindi kami siguro nagkanya- kanya sa laro namin baka may pag-asa sana kami."
Through three games, UST found solid contributions from Smart Gilas mainstay Dylan Ababou, Khazim Mirza and newcomer Allen Maliksi.
Ababou is leading the Tigers in scoring at 19 points per game, thanks to his 30-point effort against National University last Thursday with Mirza and Maliksi following suit at 18.3 and 13 points per game, respectively.
UST next plays takes on University of the East on Sunday in a battle for second spot in the team standings.
