Last Saturday on “Are You The Next Big Star?,” the 10 remaining contenders slipped into their candy-colored hot pants and platform-soled shoes, and backtracked all the way to the retro era otherwise known as the 70s.

Doing things a little differently this time, the contestants were asked to pick their songs from the ’70s and perform it in all-out production number.

Among the best performers for that night were Camille Cortez, who sang and danced to “Play That Funky Music,” and Geoff Taylor, who managed to impressively turn up the beat of popular movie theme song, “Where Do I Begin?”

Meanwhile, for the second week in a row, “Are You The Next Big Star?” fan-favorites Alexa Ortega and Greggy Santos landed in the bottom group. After being “saved” from last Saturday’s elimination, the 19-year-old theater actress and the 22-year-old former QTV VJ still fell short of the judge’s expectation. Bobby Solomon, the be-dimpled commercial model from Pasay City, and Cara Quiapos, the vibrant vocalist from Batangas, also joined them in the bottom list.

As with the previous week, voting was open from Saturday to Tuesday and the results of which will be added up to the scores from the judges – Danny Tan, Mon Faustino, Annie Quintos, Randy Santiago, and Pops Fernandez.

The aforementioned episode, which saw the dismissal of Christine Allado and PJ Gonzales, gained an overnight TV ratings of 19.5% against “Singing Bee’s” 16.3%, according to AGB Nielsen.

With only a few weeks away from the announcement of the final six, the remaining contenders are expected to whip up excellent performances enough to make them last in the competition. At stake are an exclusive management contract from GMA Artist Center, a recording contract from GMA Records, R1 million in cash from SM Supermalls, and condominium unit from Avida Land Corporation.

Ten hopefuls remain, but only eight will continue on with their journey towards becoming the country’s “next big star.” “Are You The Next Big Star?,” hosted by Regine Velasquez together with Kempee de Leon, airs every Saturday after “Pinoy Records” only on GMA-7.
