Harry Tañamor feels his career is not yet over. In fact, the 31-year-old veteran boxer who suffered a first round loss in the Beijing Games last year that left him in tears, wants another crack at Olympic glory.

Tañamor, who fights in the light flyweight division, said he will use the World Boxing Championships in Milan, Italy as a springboard to enter the 2012 London Olympics.

“Goal ko talaga yung Olympics. Kaya kung mapasali man ako sa Olympics, lalo kong paghuhusayan,” said Tañamor.

The boxer is one of the most successful boxers in the country having competed in many Southeast Asian Games. He won a silver medal in the Busan Asian Games and also captured one silver and two bronze medals in past world championships. He competed in the 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Tañamor has been named to the RP team that will compete in the world championships and he said his mind is on this event and not so much in the coming Laos SEAG.

“Mas pinaghahandaan namin ‘yun kasi world championships yun eh. Kung maganda naman ang performance namin doon, madadala naman namin yun sa SEAG,” Tañamor said.

As part of the preparations, Tañamor and eight other fighters are scheduled to leave for Cuba next month for a 21-day intensive training.

Joining him are Asian Gamers Genebert Basadre and Joan Tipon, Rey Saludar, Aston Francis Palicte, Charly Suarez, Jheritz Chaves, Joegin Ladon, and Jameboy Vicera.

Tañamor said his training in Cuba will determine how far he can still go.

“Nasa kondisyon naman ako palagi. Yung nangyari sa akin sa Beijing, kinalimutan ko na at binawi ko na naman iyon,” said Tañamor.

Tañamor redeemed himself big time after that by winning a gold medal in the World Cup of Boxing in Russia in December last year.

Tañamor and the rest of the training pool are training in Baguio, Monday to Saturday. Their regimen includes jogging, lifting weights and sparring.

“Hindi pa kami nasa peak. Siguro mga two to three weeks before ng competition, doon pa lang. Kaya alaga din kami sa katawan. Sa ngayon wala akong mga injuries,” Tañamor said.
