Filipino choirs win in Korea

Three Filipino children’s choir groups have bagged US$12,000 or approximately P580,000 each for winning in different categories in the 1st World Choir Championships in South Korea.

The Mandaue Children’s Choir, Young Voices of the Adventist University of the Philippines, and Calasiao Children’s Chorus each bagged $12,000 after bagging awards at the 1st World Choir Championships held in Channgwon City, Gyeongnam, South Korea this month, according to the Philippine Embassy in South Korea.

The Mandaue Children’s Choir won first prize, Children’s Choir category, Grand Prix of Choral Music; Young Voices of the Adventist University of the Philippines bagged gold prize, Children’s Choir category, 2nd Asia Choir Game; and silver prize, Music of the Religions category, 2nd Asian Choir Game.

The Calasiao Children’s Chorus meanwhile won first prize, Folklore category in the Korean International Open Choir Competition; and gold prize for the Korean International Open Choir Competition.

The World Choir Games is held every two years in different partner cities around the world, with competing choirs vying for the title of “Champions of the World Choir Games.”

This year, the event was competed in by 165 choirs, 99 of which were Korean choir groups and 66 foreign choir groups from 32 countries.

It will be recalled that earlier this week, the Philippine Madrigal Singers had just been named the newest Artist for Peace by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Paris, France
