Battle looms over Michael Jackson estate

LOS ANGELES, July 29, 2009 (AFP) - A battle over Michael Jackson's estate is looming after lawyers for the singer's mother alleged she was being "kept in the dark" by the executors of her son's will, it was reported Wednesday.

The Los Angeles Times reported that an attorney for Katherine Jackson has filed papers urging a judge to order two men named as administrators of Jackson's estate to submit to depositions and hand over a slew of documents.

Lawyers for Katherine Jackson accused the co-executors, John McClain and John Branca, of placing "cumbersome and unreasonable restrictions" on access to documents relating to the singer's affairs, the Times reported.

Issues surrounding Jackson's estate are to be addressed at a court hearing in Los Angeles on August 3.

Temporary control of Jackson's estate was transferred from Katherine Jackson to McClain and Branca after the two men were named as executors in a 2002 will which surfaced after the star's death on June 25.

A lawyer for Branca and McClain issued a statement Wednesday rejecting the claims made by Katherine Jackson's legal team.

"The Special Administrators have and will continue to provide timely information to Mrs Jackson's counsel regarding potential business opportunities for the Estate," the statement said.

"Any inference that we have not been forthcoming in providing information to Katherine Jackson's attorneys is not accurate."

Comments by Katherine Jackson's attorney Londell McMillan suggested her legal team was seeking to "rewrite" her son's will, the statement added.

"Based on comments made on The Today Show by one of Mrs. Jackson's attorneys it appears that they want to rewrite Michael's will to make Mrs Jackson "Guardian of the Estate" and have her appointed as an Executor and Trustee of Michael Jackson's Estate," the statement said.

"In his will Michael was very specific that his mother act as the Guardian of his children and that Mr Branca and Mr McClain be the Executors of his Will and Trustees of his Trust," it added.
