After a 22-year hiatus, former President Joseph Estrada returns to acting via Star Cinema’s “Ang Tanging Ama.”

Shooting started July 29, with Estrada doing a “bed scene” with comedienne Ai-ai de las Alas.

“Our first scene is a bed scene,” Estrada said brandishing his trademark smile.

De las Alas plays the role of Estrada’s wife, while actress/singer Toni Gonzaga plays the role of their daughter.

Also starring in the movie is hunk Sam Milby, who will be Gonzaga’s love interest. An interesting sidelight is Aling Dionisia, mother of boxing champ Manny Pacquaio, who is set to play a special role in the film.

The 72-year-old Estrada built his political career as a champion of the poor and the oppressed, which he established largely through his movie roles.

Estrada’s last movie, “Sa Kuko ng Agila (In the Eagle’s Claws)”—made in 1989 while he was a senator—portrays him as simple driver who opposes the establishment of US military bases in the Philippines.

Estrada rose from town mayor to senator to vice president before winning the presidency in 1998.

He stepped down amid massive protests in 2001. He was convicted of “plunder” and served time under “house arrest” until he was granted pardon by his successor, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Estrada said that he is considering running for president again next year.

Is the movie a means to keep himself in the “limelight?”

“I just need to work,” he quipped.

Estrada had expressed “excitement” about teaming up with De las Alas.

“It’s an honor to be working with her,” said Erap. “Most of her movies were blockbusters so I think this one is going to be a good team-up.”
