Motorists are advised to avoid several thoroughfares in Manila which will be closed to give way to the necrological service, vigil, and requiem mass for the late President Aquino at the Manila Cathedral in Intramuros, authorities said Sunday.

Aside from the closure of several roads, some 1,000 Manila policemen will be deployed around the Manila Cathedral to direct the traffic and secure the area.

In an advisory, the Manila Police Department’s Traffic Enforcement Unit (TEU) said that the stretch of A. Soriano St. from Arzobispo to Solana Streets as well as to Sta. Potenciana St. will be closed to vehicular traffic from 9:00 am, Monday to Wednesday.

Also to be closed to traffic are the stretches of Cabildo Street from A. Soriano to Sta. Potenciana Streets; Gen. Luna Street from A. Soriano to Sta. Potenciana Streets; Sto. Tomas Street from Gen. Luna to Magallanes Streets; Beatero Street from Gen. Luna to Magallanes Streets; Anda Circle from Gen. Luna to Magallanes Streets; and Real Street from Gen. Luna to Magallanes Streets.

The MPD-TEU said that A. Soriano Street from Gen. Luna to Cabildo Streets will be closed at about 6 a.m. onwards.

All passenger jeepneys coming from three Manila bridges, which take the A. Soriano Street route, are rerouted to P. Burgos Street, A. Bonifacio Drive then Anda Circle.

Other motorists planning to pass through A. Soriano Street are advised to take Taft Avenue or A. Bonifacio Drive.

Vehicles coming from Riverside Street or Magallanes Drive should take a U-turn to Plaza through Espana Boulevard or Solano Street.

MPD director Chief Supt. Rodolfo Magtibay said that the convoy for the transfer of the remains of President Aquino will be escorted by Manila policemen.

The convoy is expected to arrive at around 1 p.m. Monday at the Manila Cathedral. It will leave La Salle Greenhills at around 11:00 a.m.

Magtibay said he has ordered the deployment of 1,000 police personnel for traffic and security chores around the Manila Cathedral with the expected deluge of people who would want to see the late president and condole with her family before the interment.

The MPD director said he anticipates no setback in the enforcement of the plan, but added that his men are prepared for any eventuality.
