Confetti spirit revived

The spirit of the 1986 EDSA revolt was re-awakened as yellow confetti poured down from the high-rise buildings along Ayala Avenue in Makati City and EDSA as the funeral motorcade of the late President Corazon Cojuangco Aquino passed on its way to Manila Cathedral Monday morning thru afternoon.
After a mass held by Tarlac Bishop Florentino Sinence in La Salle-Greenhills Gymnasium, the casket of the former President was placed in a 10-wheel truck filled with flowers hich slowly moved towards EDSA as confetti poured from buildings and overpasses. Workers came out from their offices, students from their schools, and motorists and pedestrians joined the chanting of “Cory, Cory.”
While the convoy moved, people from different walks of life didn’t hesitate to show their respect for the late President. Participants in the convoy brought placards that read: “Cory Mahal Ka Namin! Hindi ka Nag-iisa! Salamat!” They wore yellow ribbons or head bands.
A 10-minute program was held when the motorcade reached the monument of the late President’s husband Ninoy where the people proudly sang People Power era songs such as Bayan Ko, and Magkaisa.
The convoy continued to move on to Quirino Avenue and then, Roxas Boulevard where more people waved to the motorcade.
At past 2:00 in the afternoon Monday, Mrs. Aquino returned for the final time to the nation's premier city where she has always been assured of unflagging support and which had been home to her for the six years that she was president.
Manila Mayor Alfredo S. Lim, a staunch supporter and loyal friend of Ms. Aquino until the very end, saw to it that the last service he carries out for the former chief executive will guarantee that people would be able to pay their last respects and tribute to her in a manner that is orderly, peaceful, and solemn by mobilizing all the city components and manpower.
Lim went to Greenhills at 9 am to coordinate and escort the remains of the former leader on the way to the Manila Cathedral in Intramuros, where she will lie in state for two days prior to her interment on Wednesday.
Manilans, workers, and students turned out in the streets and welcomed the funeral convoy bringing the remains of Ms. Aquino by lining the route from Vito Cruz all the way to the Manila Cathedral.
The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) reported Monday that the crowd who witness the funeral service of former president Corazon “Tita Cory” Aquino at Ayala Avenue in Makati was estimated at 25,000, mostly office workers in the central business district. ABS CBN however estimated that the crowd was at least 50,000.
NCRPO Spokesperson Sr. Supt. Rommel Miranda said that the crowd in Ayala Avenue after reaching Buendia Avenue was estimated at 5,000.
Miranda said that the base on the order of NCRPO Regional Director Chief Supt. Roberto Rosales, that tight security and orderly transfer of the remains of Aquino from De la Salle Greenhill in San Juan to the Manila Cathedral has been made.
