Cory's wish unfulfilled
A Catholic prelate Tuesday revealed President Corazon “Cory” Aquino’s unfulfilled wish: a trip to the Holy Land in Jerusalem.
Imus, Cavite Bishop Luis “Chito” Tagle said the former leader told him of her desire to go on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in his last phone conversation with her.
“She said: I want to go to the Holy Land. I don’t know whether I’ll be able to make another pilgrimage but I want to go to the Holy Land,” he said in his homily at the Manila Cathedral in Intramuros, where the wake of the former president is being held.
“But she said it will be a family affair. Just my family and if you’re available come with us in our pilgrimage to the Holy Land,” Tagle quoted the former President as saying.
Sadly, he said, he no longer received a call or a text message from Cory after that.
“After that conversation, I did not receive any text from her anymore and I sent her text messages and she would not respond anymore. I told myself maybe her condition has really worsened,” Tagle said.
And now that former President is already gone, he said, he is sure that she already got her wish.
“Now, Tita Cory you have reached the Holy Land. You are not only with Ninoy, you are with the whole Filipino nation and the whole world is accompanying you in this most beautiful pilgrimage,” said Tagle.
“Yes we feel lonely…but I feel excited in Tita Cory completing her pilgrimage,” he added.
Among those present during the mass were Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim, former Social Welfare Secretary Corazon “Dinky” Soliman and US Ambassador Kristie Kenney.
