Barangay league mourns loss of democracy icon
The National Liga ng mga Barangay (LnB), composed of some 40,000 barangays (villages) all over the country, passed a resolution on Tuesday expressing the league’s profound sympathy and condolences on the death of former President Corazon C. Aquino.
It an be recalled that it was under the watch of President Aquino that the Local Government Code was enacted, paving the way for the granting of more political and administrative powers to local government units (LGUs), including the barangay, in the country.
LnB President Ricojudge “RJ” Echiverri and the league’s national executive board said through Resolution No. 04-49 that the death of the former President is a great loss not only to the bereaved Aquino family but also to the entire Filipino nation.
“Former President Corazon Aquino saw the enactment of several significant legislation, including the Local Government Code of 1991, which promotes local autonomy, enhanced the power of local government units to enact local taxation measures, assurance of the share in the national internal revenue and the standardization of barangay benefits, the Family Code of 1987, the Administrative Code of 1987 and the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Act,” part of the resolution stated.
Echiverri said villages all over the country will forever owe a sense of gratitude and respect to the former President for passing landmark legislation that created and promoted local autonomy.
“During her presidency, she worked hard on the restoration of democracy, the rule of law and the civil and political rights of the people,” he said.
He also noted that she became Asia’s first woman president by virtue of a peaceful means by the Filipino people that led to the ouster of then President Ferdinand E. Marcos in what is known as the “People’s Power Revolution.”
