ANTIPOLO CITY — Some 2,000 cubic meters mixed of soil and garbage from the 19-hectare of the Rodriguez sanitary landfill collapsed and blocked the Lukutan Munti creek. Three of more than 30 shanties in the area were buried.

Police said that no one was killed or injured when a portion of the sanitary landfill wall gave way recently due to the continuous rains that softened the soil in the area where the landfill is located. These were the findings by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Calabarzon which conducted an investigation of the incident last July 30.

Based on the report, about 2,000 sq. m. lot of the sanitary landfill, owned and operated by the International SWIMS (Solid Waste and Integrated Management Specialist) was affected.

The report also said that the clearing of the soil and wastes that blocked the Lukutan Munti Creek in Barangay San Isidro, Rodriguez was started by using heavy equipment working within 24 hours to finish the job immediately last week.

tasked to protect the environment in Rizal and other provinces in Calabarzon business zone, including DENR Calabarzon Regional Executive Director Nilo Tamoria.

The other plans which include the continuous giving of information and education to the community in the area about the danger of landslide, assessment and waste samplings and analysis of the soil where the landfill is built.
