'Jolina' destroys P22 M worth of roads, bridges
A total of P22 million worth of infrastructure ranging from roads to bridges in four regions were damaged by tropical storm “Jolina,” according to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Thursday.
In an interview, DPWH Undersecretary for Luzon Romeo Momo said the destroyed bridges and roads by the typhoon were in the Ilocos region, Western Visayas, Cagayan Valley, and Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan) or Region 4-B.
“The concerned field offices are given 24 hours to clear up the road blocks and fix the damages. If the damage are extensive and would require two days or more to be repaired then they should alert the DPWH head office and install proper notices to the public,” he said.
In the reports of DPWH field offices, it appears that the most affected region was Western Visayas with P15 million worth of damages followed by Cagayan Valley that sustained P5 million in damages.
The least destruction reportedly occurred in the Ilocos region amounting only to P2 million.
“Most of the damages as a result of the onslaught of the storm were landslides and slips along the national highways. We already have a standard operating procedure (SOP) for our personnel to remove the obstacles immediately,” Momo said.
Reports showed that Western Visayas was severely damaged because the side of the Manduriao-San Miguel-Alimodan Road Eloisa Bridge in Alimodan, Iloilo was scoured that left some seven meters of the concrete carriageway hanging.
The DPWH regional offices had taken action by temporarily installing warning signs on the road and bridges to warn motorists of the danger.
Momo said he received information that the bridge proper of the Grebona Bridge in North Cotabato collapsed due to flashfloods, and roads and bridges in other regions were rendered impassable to motorists.
