Palace: Noynoy, Kris deserve public office
Malacañang Friday declared there is nothing wrong if the late President Corazon Aquino’s children decide to follow the footsteps of their parents, saying that they deserve to be “worthy successors” of their parents’ bequest of democracy.
Press Secretary Cerge Remonde and Presidential Spokesperson Gary Olivar expressed the Palace support to the pledge made by TV host Kris Aquino, Mrs. Aquino’s youngest daughter, that she and her older brother, Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, would continue the legacy left by their parents.
Several congressmen from both sides of the political fence said Kris and Noynoy may emerge as winners in next year’s elections as vice president and senator, respectively.
Remonde said any one can run even the Aquino children in this year’s election and “Malacañang will not stop them from doing so.”
“Ako mismo ay naniniwala na si Noynoy at Kris at ang Aquino clan have obligations to uphold the legacy of their parents and if the Filipino people will vote them into higher office and they are willing to accept the challenge, I think we do not see anything wrong with that,” Remonde said in an ambush interview, shortly after the signing ceremony of the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program Extension with Reform (CARPer) Bill or Republic Act 9700 at the Don Jose Mariano Park in Plaridel, Bulacan.
For his part, Olivar said the Aquinos can freely serve their country and join the caravan of new leaders. “The Aquino children are clearly worthy successors to their parents and deserve to join the new leaders of their generation as examples of their parents’ values of self-sacrifice and love of God and country.”
Remonde shrugged off claims that the President feels threatened by the full support shown by the entire nation to the Aquinos during Wednesday’s funeral cortege of the 76-year-old Mrs. Aquino whom Mrs. Arroyo tagged as a democracy icon.
