Antipolo City — A businessman was shot dead during an apparent highway robbery here while two of the suspected gunmen were arrested shortly after the killing, police said over the weekend.

Supt. Dioscoro Maata, Antipolo police chief, identified the victim as James Martin Quigley, 37, of 1124 Jasmine st., Antipolo Valley Subd., Lacolina, Barangay Mambugan.

The arrested suspects, on the other hand, were identified as Nicolas Deen Jr., 54, of Karangalan Village, Barangay Manggahan, Pasig City, and Heron Pandi Abdulhaman, 43 of Baltazar st., Barangay Sto. Tomas, Pasig City.

Police said Quigley was driving his BMW car (XDF 523) along the Lacolina access road near the corner of Sumulong Highway last Thursday morning when he was blocked by a Tamaraw FX whose occupants immediately fired shots at him.

Two of the gunmen then alighted from their vehicle and destroyed the glass window of the victim’s car, then took away some P110,000 in cash, .45 caliber pistol and other pertinent papers and documents.

The incident prompted the local police to issue an alarm for the assailants’ vehicle, and other units immediately put up road blocks.

The assailants’ car was subsequently flagged down by lawmen along Ortigas Avenue Extension in Barangay Beverly Hills, Antipolo, but the occupants tried to escape, prompting the police to pursue them.

After a brief chase, the assailants’ car was cornered, prompting Deen and Abdulhaman to surrender, but their two other unidentified companions were able to escape.
