Bulletin photos, stories awarded
Photographs published at the Manila Bulletin bested 150 other entries for the Outstanding Photograph on Youth and Education category of the 2009 De La Salle University La Sallian Scholarum Awards.
Regie Mason's Left alone amid dangers and Linus Guardian Escandor's US helicopter lands in Dumagat Country respectively won the first and honorable mention citations of the category during Friday's awarding ceremonies at The Peninsula Manila in Makati City.
For their award-winning photographs, Mason got a P25,000 check and a glass Orlina trophy while Escandor received a P10,000 check and a certificate.
Aside from Mason and Escandor, Manila Bulletin’s Mark Balmores, Richard Viñas, Rizaldy Comanda, and Noel Celis were among the finalists in the Photography category while Rachel Castro-Barawid, Kristyn Maquire, Ina Hernando-Malipot, Angel Garcia, Ronald Lim were nominees for the Feature Story on Youth and Education category. Augusto Villalon, meanwhile, was another Manila Bulletin contender for the Feature Story on DLSU category.
But it was Stephanie Dychiu’s New lives for teen gangs published at the Marie Claire Philippines that snatched the Outstanding Feature Story on Youth and Education award; Howie Severino’s Papa papa, paano ako ginawa? aired at i-Witness of GMA Network, Inc. that won the Outstanding Televised Feature on Youth and Education award; Hazel Joy Galamay’s FEU’s artistic heritage: Renewing a sense of pride published at The Advocate that earned the Oustanding Feature Story on Youth and Education in a School Organ award; and Augusto Villalon’s La Salle Building cited on international architecture list published at the Philippine Daily Inquirer that got the Outstanding Feature Story on DLSU award.
The La Sallian Scholarum Awards is an annual recognition of outstanding media coverage of Filipino youth and education from print, photo, broadcast and campus journalists nationwide. Since 2004, Manila Bulletin’s writers and photographers fared well in the competition.
Among those who won for Manila Bulletin are writer Amyline Quien Ching in 2004, photographer Ali Vicoy in 2005, editor Nestor Cuartero in 2007, and writers Blooey Singson and Ronald Lim in 2008.
This year’s judges include Isabela Gov. Grace Padaca, UP Journalism Department chairperson Rachel Khan, DLSU Marketing Communication Executive Director Jose Mari Magpayo, Knowledge Channel Foundation president Rina Lopez-Bautista, and RFM Corporation president Joey Concepcion.
