Marikina plebiscite peaceful
The plebiscite held in Marikina City was generally peaceful with minor problems like the missing names in the Comelec list of voters, authorities said Saturday.
The missing names resulted in failure of some residents in Barangay Malanday to cast their votes on whether to split the barangay into two.
As early as Friday night, brochures were scattered with words “No Tayo. Pagkakaisa Hindi Paghahati.”
The voting lasted until 3 p.m. and the ballot boxes were brought to the Marikina PNP where the counting was to be held.
Police were assigned in the area to ensure peace and order.
Malanday Barangay Captain Joseph Briones expressed opposition for the split, saying it was part of a plan to favor some officials in the 2010 elections.
Marikina Mayor Marides C. Fernando stressed the need to split the barangay which has a population of 58,000, which is even bigger that the population of some the municipalities in the provinces.
