Label ponders stand on CBCP-Dagtang Lason issue
Ivory Music & Video is still undecided if they will pull out from the market the CD of Dagtang Lason following the condemnation by theCatholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) of the troika’s controversial hit song, “Nagmahal Ako…Ng Bakla!”
As of this writing, Jon Daza, the label’s A & R Manager, said they are still “discussing” the matter and that they plan to come up with “a proper plan of action very soon.”
Daza added that rappers Buhawi, Kadena and Marbaggz collectively known as Dagtang Lason, refuse to comment on the issue “as per [Ivory Music and Video's] lawyer’s order.”
Since its release, “Nagmahal Ako” has scored at least two million hits on YouTube and has garnered heavy airplay on local radio.
The sales of “Dagtang Lason” CD, meanwhile, skyrocketed in the wake of CBCP’s condemnation.
“Nagmahal Ako…Ng Bakla!” is a novelty song about men who have decided to "love" homosexuals over some "gold digger" women.
Part of the song lyrics goes: " Pineperahan lang kami, Kaya ngayon bakla na lang ang aming iibigin, Masarap magmahal ang bakla..."
Recently, Alpha Music pulled out from stores Blanktape’s album “Chika Lang 'Yon!” which contains the song “Banana,” also on CBCP’s hit list. The label issued an apology to those who “were offended by the record.”
“Banana” is an adaptation of Akon’s “Right Now (Nanana)” with lyrics such as “Sige i-try mo ang aking banana, pag natikman mo di magsasawa. Dahil masustansya ang aking banana at ubod pa ng sarap ang aking banana.”
According to Caloocan Bishop Deogracias Iñiguez, who heads the CBCP’s Committee on Public Affairs, the two songs “go against the teaching of the church” and “corrupt the minds of our youth.”
Iniguez urged for the banning of “Banana” and “Nagmahal Ako” both of which, he said, have a lewd “double meaning.”
Blanktape [aka Arlen Mandangan] refuted Iniguez’ allegations in an interview.
“As far as I’m concerned, ‘Banana’ is clean. I had no intention making it [sound] indecent. The song refers to an actual banana, nothing more. It is actually my tribute to the banana as a popular local snack,” said the rap artist.
Mandangan explained that since he got the idea for ‘Banana’ from “Right Now (Nanana),” he thought of finding a Tagalog rhyme to the original for his version.
“[The word] banana instantly came to mind [and] that’s how the song came to be.”
Iniguez advised composers to “think first” when writing songs so that their works “do not have a negative effect to the society.”
The CBCP is the official organization of the Catholic episcopacy in the Philippines. It is considered one of the most influential bodies in Philippine politics and society in general.
