WW II cannon found by dredgers
A private contractor hired to help rehabilitate the Pasig River discovered and retrieved a vintage World War II (WW II) artillery cannon, the Philippine Coast Guard reported on Tuesday.
The Kwan Sing Corporation, a sub-contractor of Baggerwerken Decloedt en Zoon N.V that was contracted by the Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission to undertake the Pasig River Rehabilitation Dredging Project, recovered a vintage artillery canon.
Commodore Luis Tuazon, Coast Guard NCR District Commander requested that assistance be rendered to bring the cannon to the Coast Guard District Headquarters in Parola Compound in Binondo, Manila for examination and proper disposition.
The cannon believed to have been used during the Second World War was brought to Headquarters Philippine Coast Guard.
The cannon was found to have worn-out artillery shell at the rear end of the barrel. Earlier on, the dredgers and sea marshals also recovered old cannon shells which were turned over to the District’s Special Operation’s Group.
PCG Commandant Admiral Wilfredo Tamayo said that the successful recovery meant a lot in carefully handling important relics of the past history dating back in 1945.
