Gordon rider on Helmet Bill opposed
Senator Richard Gordon’s proposal to put plate number stickers on motorcycle helmets as part of a provision in the Mandatory Helmet Bill is being opposed by motorcycle owners.
Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr., proponent of the measure, said that during a hearing held by the Senate Committee on Public Services, Gordon’s proposal was opposed by motorcycle groups led by the Motorcycle Philippines Federation (MCPF).
Revilla said Gordon’s proposal would have to be separated from his bill that would require all motorcycle riders, including back riders, to wear standard protective helmets.
Revilla said the Mandatory Helmet Bill should be urgently passed because it is “long overdue.”
“Marami nang mga aksidenteng kinakasangkutan ng motorsiklo. Kahit wala ngang batas, dapat kusang-loob na magsuot ng helmet ang mga nagmomotorsiklo dahil para ito sa kaligtasan nila. Kinakailangan pang gumawa ng batas para maobliga ang lahat ng mag-helmet,” Revilla said.
Revilla said his committee has agreed to heed the point raised by MPCF director Atoy Cruz who said that any paint, sticker, or any other aggressive materials could adversely affect the quality of the helmet.
