Luneta monument for Cory definite
The establishment of a monument in honor of the late former President Corazon “Cory” Aquino and the late former Sen. Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. will carry on despite hesitations from the Aquino family.
Press Secretary Cerge Remonde said President Arroyo has already decided on the establishment of the monument at the Rizal Park in Manila. He said it would particularly benefit future generations.
The Chief Executive had instructed the immediate construction of a monument for the Aquinos at the Rizal Park on Thursday.
Remonde also assured that President Arroyo is one with the late former president in the latter’s advocacy for democracy and good governance.
Earlier, Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III said a monument in honor of his parents would be “useless” unless Mrs. Arroyo becomes an advocate of democracy and good governance, adding that voters made a mistake in voting for her in the last presidential elections.
“It’s very sad to hear that kind of commentary from Sen. Noynoy Aquino. We can assure him that at end of the term of President Arroyo, those who voted for her will not regret it,” Remonde said.
“President Arroyo has decided to honor the memory of (the late former) President Cory (Aquino) appropriately,” he added.
The family of the late former president had also been offered a state funeral for Mrs. Aquino, who died August 1 after a bout with colon cancer, but decided against it.
After the death and burial of Mrs. Aquino, public officials had been proposing to name some public infrastructures after her as well as the declaration of a Cory Aquino Day. Malacañang had said any move honoring the late former president is appropriate.
