FEU junior who scored 83 points cited
Terrence Romeo of Far Eastern University-Nicanor Reyes Educational Foundation (FERN) set a new record in scoring in high school division of the 72nd UAAP basketball tournament by exploding for 83 points in the team’s 104-55 annihilation of University of the Philippines Integrated School last Tuesday became the first high school player to win the UAAP Press Corps Player of the Week award.
Among the players he upstaged for the weekly citation were UP’s Miguel Reyes, Ateneo's Kirk Long and University of the East’s Pari Llagas who all played stellar roles in their respective team’s wins over the weekend.
Romeo, a transferee from the Letran Squires, erased the old record of 69 points registered by Paolo Mendoza sometime in the mid-90's while playing for the UP junior Maroons. Romeo also scored 45 points when FEU-FERN thrashed Adamson Baby Falcons, 74-58, in the season opener.
He drained 29 of his 42 two-point field goal attempts, connected five of his 22 tries from the three-point arc and nailed 10 of his 13 free throws.
Romeo, who played for 31 minutes before fouling out, had a quarter scoring of 19, 11, 33, and 20.
Baby Tamaraws coach Horacio Lim was all praise for his ward.
“Noong gumawa na siya ng 30 points sa first half, sinabi ko kay Romeo na go for the record," said Lim.
Getting an order from his coach, Romeo scored all the 33 points of his team in the third period.
