Filipino BIS economist 2009 BPInoy Awardee
For four years and running, the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI)has been annually recognizing outstanding Overseas Filipinos who have brought honor to the Philippines through their achievements and success overseas. This year, BPI has chosen economist and banker Dr. Eli Remolona as a BPInoy Awardee.
“BPI is proud to confer the BPInoy Award to Dr. Remolona for his excellence in the field of economics and banking. We celebrate the “Pinoy” qualities such as diligence and superior work ethics that he has displayed on a global platform,” says Teresita B. Tan, SVP and Head of Overseas Banking and Channels Services Group of BPI.
Dr. Remolona is currently the Chief Representative for Asia and the Pacific of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) headquartered in Switzerland. The BIS is the bank for major central banks around the world, and Dr. Remolona is responsible for the 12 most important economies in the region. He has also occupied several posts at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and has taught at Columbia University, New York University and the University of the Philippines.

For young Filipino economists and finance professionals, Dr. Remolona imparts this advice: Work like a dog and seek a mentor, someone who can teach you the ropes of the industry and relay experiences not found in school textbooks.
