Letran drew a pair of 18 points from its 1-2 punch in RJ Jazul and Rey Guevarra to eke out a thrilling 89-85 win over Arellano University and boost its Final Four bid in the 85th NCAA basketball tournament on Friday at The Arena in San Juan.

Of the two, it was Jazul who struck hardest, scoring 10 of his output in the fourth.

The win was a revenge of sort for the Knights, but more than that, they improved their record to 8-4 for solo fourth. The Chiefs slipped to fifth with a 7-5 mark.

With five of his teammates out due to either foul trouble or injury, Jazul rattled off seven of the team’s last eight points, including a trey that gave the Knights a commanding 88-82 lead with 11.3 seconds left.

“You can call it sweet revenge, but it was a tough win,” Letran coach Louie Alas said.

The Chiefs trailed most of the way but came through with one big uprising to tie the count at 80-all on a jumper by Girio Ciriacruz with 3:32 left.

Ciriacruz matched his league-high 31 points, including nine in the last period, but was shut down in the crucial stage of the game – no thanks to Letran’s air-tight defense.

Earlier, Emilio Aguinaldo College leaned on the heroics of Argel Mendoza to score a vengeful 68-63 win over University of Perpetual Help.

The 5-foot-11 Mendoza intentionally split his charities with 2.8 seconds left to give the Generals a 66-63 lead, before he grabbed his own miss and pulled up a jumper that beat the buzzer for the final count.

Mendoza finished with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Claude Cubo also had the same output as the Generals improved to 3-9.
