Games Sunday (The Arena)
2 p.m. — UST vs NU
4 p.m. — Ateneo vs Adamson

University of the East averted what could have been a monumental collapse in the fourth quarter and scored a 66-64 squeaker past De La Salle University to clinch at least a playoff for one of the two remaining Final 4 berths in the 72nd UAAP basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.

The Warriors saw a 17-point advantage slip away and anxiously watched as the Archers took a three-point lead with three minutes to play.

But to the Archers’ dismay, key conversions and defensive stops in the final two minutes allowed the Warriors to escape with the victory.

The win, the Warriors’ seventh in 11 games, assured UE of at least a playoff for one of the two remaining Final 4 berths, thanks to the Archers who slipped to a 4-7 card.

As it is only University of Santo Tomas is capable of overtaking UE for the No. 3 position while the Archers need to win their last three games and pray that the Warriors lose all theirs to forge a playoff for a semifinals seat.

Pari Llagas finished with 22 points and seven rebounds, Elmer Espiritu had 15 while guard Paul Lee added 13 markers for the Warriors.

Hyram Bagatsing’s 12 points, including one of his three treys in the payoff period that gave La Salle the lead for the last time, 64-61, went to waste as the Archers dropped their fifth consecutive game.

In the first game, Far Eastern University all but shut the door on University of the Philippines, 86-74.

The Tamaraws, who also assured themselves of at least a playoff for one of the two twice-to-beat incentives in the semifinals, heeded the call of coach Glenn Capacio for consistency after a struggling win over Adamson University last Thursday.

Rookie RR Garcia scored 17 points for the Tams while Aldrech Ramos notched his fifth double-double of the season with 16 points and a career-high 15 rebounds as the Morayta-based cagers led from start to finish to snare their 10th win against two defeats.
