Lions eye 11th win vs AUF
Games Monday (The Arena, San Juan City)
10 a.m. — AUF vs San Beda (Jrs)
11:45 a.m. — Jose Rizal vs Mapua (Jrs)
2 p.m. — AUF vs San Beda (Srs)
4 p.m. — Jose Rizal vs Mapua (Srs)
Defending champion San Beda guns for win No. 11 even as JRU expects another ‘Superman’ performance from John Wilson when they take on separate rivals Monday in the 85th NCAA basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
San Beda battles Angeles University Foundation at 2 p.m. with the Red Lions heavily favored to repeat over the Danes, whom it pulverized 102-74 in the first round.
Against a team which could only show one win in 11 outings, the Lions are expected to turn their game into a virtual workout and notch their 10th straight triumph that will keep them close to league leader San Sebastian, which sports an 11-0 win-loss card.
Clashing at 4 p.m. are third-running Heavy Bombers (9-2) and Mapua (1-10).
Neither team carries slight edge in this match up since both teams fought on almost equal terms during their first round date although it was the Bombers who ended up as winners, 83-78.
Even JRU coach Ariel Vanguardia concedes they have to raise their game several notches to prevail, saying: “It’s really a different ball game everytime we meet Mapua. They’re a tough team and although they are struggling in the standings, they only lost in close games.”
For them to win, Wilson should dish out the same A-game he produced in JRU’s 95-85 win over College of St. Benilde last week. He scored a career- and tournament-high 48 points while also grabbing personal-high 17 rebounds.
So awesome was Wilson that he also listed many firsts in the league, including the highest output by an individual in more than three decades.
Wilson’s 48 points turned out to be the second best since Lim Eng Beng of then La Salle scored 55 points in 1974.
His performance also bested the previous season high of 32 points made by CSB team captain Jeff Morial while his 18 field goals also eclipsed Morial and San Beda’s Sudan Daniel’s 12.
