Critics champion new Whitney album
Iconic R&B singer Whitney Houston is back with a brand new album, “I Look To You” and already, critics are singing her lavish praise:
“‘I Look To You’ is loaded with tunes that are perfect for recapturing the magic that made her a transcendent star. With A-list songwriters and producers, Houston makes the most of it. She clearly hasn’t forgotten how to sing imbuing the material with emotional power without a lot of overly dramatic vocal runs,” lauded USA Today.
The New York Times’ assessment was short but sweet: “Whitney re-emerges with full diva qualifications on ‘I Look To You.’”
Ditto with People magazine: “It’s sure great to hear that (Whitney’s) voice again.”
Rolling Stone magazine hails Whitney’s record as “a modern soul record.”
“(It is) a collection of spunky love songs that aim at something more immediate and tangible than nostalgia or catharsis…distinctively Whitney,” the review read.
However, Los Angeles Times gave the biggest accolade of all.
“Certain voices stand like monuments upon the landscape of the 20th century pop, defining the architecture of their times, sheltering the dreams of millions, and inspiring the climbing careers of countless imitators. Whitney Houston owns one of those voices.”
“I Look To You” is the first album Whitney has released since 2002’s “Just Whitney.”
The six-time Grammy Winner's drama-filled, seven-year hiatus from the music industry life made for media fodder.
Her fall from grace was marked by tabloid reports of both drug addiction and an abusive marriage to fellow R&B singer Bobby Brown.
Now, with a brand new album out under Sony Music, many are hoping that she gets to conquer anew the scene which she once owned.
Looks like Whitney is on to a great start.
