CEBU CITY – After conducting a series of seminars intended for hospitals in the region in line with the implementation of health care waste management, the Department of Health (DoH)’s Region 7 Office is now confident that before this year ends more hospitals will be complying with its mandate.

Engineer Evangeline Canoneo, DoH7 Environment Program Coordinator said only 10 percent of hospitals in Central Visayas are properly complying with the mandates of health care waste management, as majority of them does not have idea about its implementation while others do not have the resources to acquire equipments for proper waste treatment.

Central Visayas has registered 108 hospitals where six are under DoH7, 55 are run by local government units (LGUs), and 47 are privately owned.

Canoneo revealed that during their seminars done earlier this year, it was learned that many hospitals in the region are unaware of health care waste management.

“After conducting the seminars, where we discussed five modules including dealing with healthcare waste and its impact, solid waste management in healthcare facilities, wastewater management, health and safety, and administrative aspects," she said.
