Jolina shocked by "StarStruck" snub
Jolina Magdangal was not informed that she’s no longer a co-host of the forthcoming fifth season of “StarStruck,” making her feel “shocked and disappointed.”
This is according to the singer, actress, and TV host’s father and manager, Jun Magdangal, when sought by Manila Bulletin Online on Sept. 2 for reaction to issues about Jolina that cropped up while she was in Hawaii to sing the Philippine national anthem at Brian Viloria’s successful defense of his light flyweight title.
“When (‘StarStruck 5’) teasers came out, I asked (the people behind the production) for (Jolina’s) schedule, but I was surprised to be told that she is no longer a co-host,” the elder Magdangal said.
“StarStruck 5,” GMA-7’s reality TV talent search that debuted in 2003, was launched last Aug. 30 on the Sunday noontime program “SOP” and introduced actress Carla Abellana into the company of co-hosts Dingdong Dantes and Raymond Gutierrez.
That same day, the delayed telecast of the Viloria fight against Mexican Jesus Iribe was shown on Channel 7 without the pre-bout ceremony in which Jolina sang “Lupang Hinirang.”
“We didn’t (know) what happened between Solar (Entertainment Corp) and GMA-7 on the Viloria fight,” Mr. Magdangal said in referring to the co-presenters of the boxing event.
He had told Manila Bulletin Online in an interview last week that Jolina would sing the national anthem the “standard and legal way” that, unfortunately, wasn’t witnessed by viewers of the bout’s Philippine telecast straight from Hawaii.
Magdangal is also clueless about his daughter’s return to the early morning program, “Unang Hirit,” aired weekdays on GMA-7.
“We don’t know what’s happening with GMA,” he said.
It can be recalled that Jolina’s work relationship with GMA-7 began in 2002, when she and her father decided not to renew her contract with the network’s rival ABS-CBN where she started out on TV in 1992 and became a multimedia star soon after.
With GMA-7, Jolina headlined programs like “Narito ang Puso Ko,” “I Love NY,” and “StarStruck,” which she began co-hosting with Dingdong on its second season in 2004 after solely presenting “StarStruck Kids” earlier that year.
“StarStruck” is a hit GMA-7 franchise that turned past winners Jennylyn Mercado, Mark Herras, Aljur Abrenica, and Kris Bernal along with also-rans Katrina Halili and Cristine Reyes into popular showbiz denizens.
Jolina’s other show, the primetime comedy series “Adik sa ‘Yo,” is set to conclude next week. After that, she’s left with only two projects with GMA-7, “Dear Friend,” where she and former love team partner Marvin Agustin appear as letter readers and advisers to lovesick TV viewers, and Sunday variety show "SOP."
Last July, Jolina was rumored to be leaving GMA-7, but her father parried off the speculations citing her multiple projects on Channel 7.
