Rains and floods cause suspension of classes in NCR
The Department of Education National Capital Region (DepEd-NCR) director Teresita Domalanta suspended afternoon classes Wednesday at 10:30 in the morning due to the heavy rains brought by tropical depression “Maring, which flooded parts of Metro Manila.
“Ang afternoon classes, mula pre-school hanggang high school sa NCR ay suspended na (All afternoon classes, from pre-school to high school in NCR are suspended),” Domalanta said.
DepEd also advised local DepEd officials and local government executives in other areas that may be harshly affected by the storm and they may decide to suspend classes in their areas. Suspension of classes also depends on local situation, which includes flooding and landslides that may endanger the students.
Early Wednesday morning, “Maring” was spotted 230 km west northwest of Dagupan City and was expected to move north northwest. The tropical depression brought heavy rains in Luzon, mostly affecting the central and northern part of the island.
On Tuesday, at 11:00 p.m. the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) declared signal no. 1 in the areas of Ilocos Sur, La Union, Batanes, Bataan, Western Pangasinan and Lubang Island.
Pre-school classes in these affected areas were automatically suspended, following DepEd’s suspension guidelines.
Also on Tuesday, the local government of Malabon ordered the suspension of classes in both elementary and high school levels in five villages, which included Dampalit, Niugan, Catmon, Tinajeros and Maysilo. The heavy rains flooded parts of Malabon.
