UN’s National Ambassador Against Hunger KC Concepcion answered “No!” when movie scribes asked if she and Piolo Pascual are already an item. The media caught up with the Mega-daughter Tuesday afternoon at the Bayo store inside Eastwood Mall in Libis, Quezon City.

But the bigger news of the day drowned speculations on KC’s love choices and her entire movie plans because she was there for a cause. KC attended one of the more important press gatherings of her life not calling for blockbuster support but to save lives.

KC has just teamed up with the clothing line Bayo and the UN for a feeding program called “YOU (can now feed a child)” aimed at providing nutritious meals for school children in conflict-affected areas in Central Mindanao through the food-for-education activities of the UN World Food Programme (WFP).

In an interview with the Manila Bulletin, KC shared this Einstein of an idea that the people from Bayo thought about: “Asking the UN if they’d agree to a drive selling fashion articles that KC would design for the benefit of hungry children in Mindanao.”

KC said Bayo, which she’s been wearing for three years now, has been asking her to design a set of clothes to sell but said, “I just could not find the time to do it. The schedule keeps getting in the way.”

Little did she know that it was not a matter of finding the time but the right cause. Now whoever said that fashion could not cure hunger problem in the Philippines has to learn of this news.

KC stressed, “Every six second a kid in the world dies of hunger. You couldn’t fight disease when you’re hungry and the UN health program does not only help the kids find food but make them work for food because you have to go to school for it. They have to stay in school to get the monthly racion.”

Four KC-designed hoodies (called Cookie, Kristina, KC and Cassandra) in time for the season worth a little over a thousand pesos and “you also can be an ambasador in your own way,” KC added.

The purchase of each jacket goes a long way. As KC pointed out, “It’s a global fight. With one purchase it could mean a lot. Also you know that you’ve done your part.”

Stephen Anderson, UN World Food Programme Country Director is very thankful that KC and Bayo arrived at a noble idea. He told the Bulletin, “KC said everything much more eloquently. I really like these hoodies. I have two daughters and I know they want to have these [so all] I could say is thank you to everybody here for making this possible.”

The designs, KC said are “very personal [because the line’s] got my handwriting and the logos of two of the hoodies, ginamit ko nung debut and my TV special. The colors are very subdued. We did mainly black, white, gold, mustard, and charcoal gray because of the cause. I think apart pa sa purpose na pag pumasok ka makikita mo agad yung section where the hoodies are it’s also because of the very humble cause.”

Selling the entire line would feed 30 percent of hungry Filipinos mainly women and children, KC said.

Right now, there is much clamor for one of the hoodies KC designed and since there are very limited stocks (only 500 pieces per design), the pop fashion public found a deeper reason giving into shopaholic bursts because of this cause. And if the campaign becomes very successful, KC said she would be more than willing to do a sequel, if only to wage war against global hunger.
