Obama to appear on David Letterman's late-night talk show

NEW YORK, Sept 15, 2009 (AFP) - President Barack Obama will appear on comedian David Letterman's talk show "Late Show with Letterman" next week, CBS said Tuesday.

"Tune in on Monday night as President Barack Obama visits the Late Show as Dave's sole guest for the entire broadcast," a statement posted on the show's website said.

Obama will be Letterman's guest in New York a day after he speaks to five different Sunday talk shows as part of his continuing efforts to win support for his ambitious plan to overhaul the US health care system.

Battling growing opposition to his plans, Obama has already addressed a joint session of Congress on the subject, and he traveled to Minnesota last weekend to hold a campaign-style rally to garner further backing.

Obama will be the first sitting president to appear on the "Late Show," according to CBS. He appeared five times on the show before taking office in January, most recently in September 2008, at the height of his presidential campaign.

In March, Obama appeared on Jay Leno's "The Tonight Show" as he sought to defend his economic recovery plan. The late-night comic debuted "The Jay Leno Show" on Monday with a new, coveted prime-time slot at 10:00 pm (0500 GMT) on NBC.
