Of Macs and Tux

It is all about music

This Apple event is all about music. Whilst some thought that Apple will finally get The Beatles on the iTunes Music Store, unfortunately it was not the case. However, Apple did release quite a number of updates to its music offerings.

First stop is iTunes. This is the heart of the entire Apple music ecosystem. Apple just released iTunes version 9. The new software sports a new look and provides some new features. Whilst I thought it is already 64-bit like the rest of the Mac OS X applications, this release still comes in 32-bit. I doubt if anybody gives a damn if it is 32 or 64 but the other features might compel you to upgrade asap.

Two iTunes 9 features that immediately became my favorite is the iPhone/iPod Touch App Management. Yes, you can finally arrange all your apps from within iTunes and sync it to your iPhone/iPod Touch to commit the changes. Now it is easy to restore your device from your recent back-up and have your apps arranged just the way you like it. In my case, I tried fitting in my most frequently used apps in the first two pages and the next pages are categorizes as games, photo/imaging, social networking and tools. Unfortunately, I have far too many apps than space on the page.

Home Sharing is my next favorite feature. Previous iTunes versions allowed you to share your library and stream it to others. iTunes 9 extends that by allowing you to share your library (including Applications) by adding drag, copy and drop. This is heaven-sent specially if you have multiple Macs and multiple devices at home. Apple just restricts you via their 5-authorized computers limit.

There are other new iTunes features, such as sync via genre or artist, LPs, etc. Just drop by the iTunes site and learn more about it.

Apple also released iPhone/iPod Touch OS 3.1 with features such as remote lock via MobileMe, App Store and iTunes Music store purchase via credit card, promo code or gift card, Ringtone downloading, Genius Recommendations for Apps and Genius Remixes, Save video from Mail and MMS into Camera Roll and much more. This is a free upgrade for iPhone users and I think if you purchased 3.0 for your iPod Touch, this is also free for you -- at least I was not billed for it.

Along with software releases, Apple updated its iPod line. First, the iPod Shuffle just added a new model, 2GB, with the 4GB model. Frankly, I wish that Apple discontinues this model or replace it with a smaller version of the original shuffle.

The iPod Touch and iPod Classic had a capacity bump with the Classic coming in at 160GB and the iPod Touch topping at 64GB. This means that next year’s iPhone will have 32GB and 64GB capacities, if not bigger.

The last Apple music device is the Nano that was modified with a video camera. Whilst definitely not an HD device but it is sufficient enough to pass as YouTube HQ quality video. The new Nano comes with mic, speakers, FM radio and even a pedometer! Sounds tempting, eh? Just wish that Apple will send me a review unit - can’t wait to see how the video capture experience is.

Apple teased us by mentioning the netbook, but unfortunately there is no tablet or netbook-like device. Who knows, maybe January? I am just happy that Apple did not release it -- at least it saved me a lot of money.
