One of the reasons people should watch “Spoiled Brat the Movie” is...laughter.

As the saying goes, laughter is the best medicine. Director Mike Tuviera said their goal from day one was to make people laugh. The movie is designed to make moviegoers forget whatever problems they have in life.

He recalled that whenever he was down, he would simply tune-in to “Eat Bulaga,” watch Tito, Vic and Joey and the rest of the EB crew and life would feel better. As he explained in the vernacular, “gagaan ang buhay mo.”

“Like what my dad always says, we all need comedy in our lives. Sometimes talaga when life gets too hard, sinasabi nga niya palagi, people need to laugh. It became my father’s calling. Laughter is a very precious gift that you can give your viewers,” Mike stressed.

He added that another of their objectives in helming “Spoiled Brat the Movie” was for the public to see how fun it was doing the whole film. It has always been a buffet of laughter off-camera.

“Most of our funny moments were not even on screen. Talagang masaya lang kami and I think our camaraderie came out on screen…we really want to make the best of what we can so people, for at least some moments in their lives, could say ‘kaya natin ito,’” he related.

“Spoiled Brat the Movie” is the film spin-off of the successful Yaya and Angelina segment of GMA-7’s gag show, “Bubblegang.” Breathing life to the TV characters Yaya and Angelina are Michael V as Yaya and Ogie Alcasid as Angelina. It already has its TV spin-off through “Hole in the Wall” but their followers can’t seem to get enough of Yaya and Angelina comic antics that a movie based on them has become inevitable.

“I was really nervous when I was told I would direct this movie. The pressure comes from it being a successful show. Then there’s pressure too in my part because I’m also a fan and I don’t want to fail myself and other fans as well,” confessed Mike.

For avid fans of “Bubblegang,” “Spoiled Brat the Movie”would tackle on the origins of Yaya and Angelina, how they met and so on. For those who are not familiar with the characters, this is the perfect vehicle to get to know them and have fun doing so. It is designed to be enjoyed by everyone.

Mike’s first to direct a comedy, what were his reasons in accepting such challenging film project as “Spoiled Brat the Movie?”

“This was a dream come true project. The number one reason for me was to work with Michael and Ogie. I’ve worked around them like nakatrabaho ko si Regine Velasquez and we would talk about Ogie and we would talk to Ogie. And of course my father is in ‘Eat Bulaga’ and I’ve always known Michael V but I haven’t been able to work with him at a daily basis. So when the opportunity came, I accepted it immediately. I would work with them in a heartbeat,” he replied.

Striking a balance between his two stars wasn’t a problem. He even called shooting this film his most collaborative experience. He was so proud that from day one, his stars were also pitching in concepts and comedy skits for the film. Michael V and Ogie were always present during their meetings which for him helped a lot in keeping true to the film’s direction and goal.

“I think that it never became a problem, we have a wonderful script. There is equal attention between the two of them. They have their respective moments and magaganda lahat… I think one of the biggest compliments that I could give Ogie and Michael V was even with their most experiences, they respect the structure and I was very surprised. They respect the director as the captain of the ship,” he smiled.

He was also in awe to how the two worked in the realm of comedy. When everything relied on a director, for this film, he was presented with a lot of options to a comedy sequence thanks to both Michael V and Ogie.

“If I was the captain of this ship, grabe naman sa pagka-creative ng mga kasama ko sa ship na ito. Talagang everyone put their heart and soul into the movie talaga,” he remarked proudly.

So did he still discover something new about Michael V and Ogie?

“That they’re absolute geniuses. I can say without batting an eyelash, that Michael V is a comedic genius in his songwriting and in the way he writes. Sometimes I would tell him that a scene doesn’t work as well. Two seconds later, meron na siyang option. While Ogie is really a funny man, he is musical genius naman. Ogie came up with the songs for the movie and incredible talaga, nakakatawa. Kapag nagsulat sila hindi nila iniisip yung end product lang. Iniisip muna nila yung pinanggagalingan. Gagawa siya ng love song tapos may halong comedy,” opined Mike.

Known for his horror flicks and drama series, directing a comedy was a revelation for Mike Tuviera, He even calls it coming back home since he grew-up with the “Eat Bulaga” family.

“I’m really enjoying it. I’ve done drama, I’ve done fantasy and I’ve done horror. Ang hirap pala talaga ng comedy. You have to be meticulous about the timing and blocking and everything. I’m just glad that they entrusted me with that kind of responsibility and they really supported me here. It wasn’t a director talking down to his cast or vice versa. Naging barkadahan talaga,” he said.

Produced by GMA Films and APT Entertainment, also in “Spoiled Brat the Movie” are Aiko Melendez, Jomari Yllana, Iza Calzado, Sheena Halili, Victor Aliwalas, Jojo Alejar, Roxanne Guinoo, Pekto Nacua, John Feir and Leo Martinez.

“Spoiled Brat the Movie” will have its special premiere on Sept. 20 at SM Megamall and regular screenings in cinemas begin on Sept. 23.
