Princess overwhelmed by instant success

New-face Princess is quite at a loss for words in describing her feeling over the seemingly instant fame she’s experiencing resulting from the triumph of her debut album “Addicted To Acoustic” which spawned her now-famous version of Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies.” The album released by Vicor Music in response to the growing clamor for acoustic renditions of familiar hits is now a certified Gold Awardee at this time when selling CDs is like encouraging Internet-users to buy second hand encyclopedias.
The Gold Record award for the 18-song, all revival project was presented last month over ABS-CBN’s “ASAP ‘09” where Princess performed her hit single with mainstays Karylle and Toni Gonzaga. It only took two months after the album’s release to achieve such a respectable status.
“I still can’t believe this is all happening. I’m overwhelmed by how things are turning out,” Princess told the Manila Bulletin during a short chat prior to her guesting over QTV’s “Fashionistas By Heart” show held at SM The Block last Tuesday.
Princess has a voice that’s been charming listeners and a look assuring the latter that what they’re hearing is as pretty as she is in person. Her voice and the likable choices of revivals have worked well in tandem enough to attract music fans to go straight to Odyssey Music and Video stores and other leading record bars.
Apart from “Single Ladies,” other current hits recorded by Princess in her own chic-rock style are “Bleeding Love,” “Love Story,” “Right Now (Na Na Na),” “Say It Again,” “T-Shirt,” among others. For her follow-up single, her snappy remake of Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours” was picked to enter the playlist of top stations 90.7 Love Radio, 101.1 Yes-FM and Easy Rock 96.3. “I love that really. I love interpreting songs that have good lyrics and recall,” she noted.
Other stations which have supported the young singer’s debut album are Jam 88.3, Wave 89.1 and Mellow 94.7.
Princess is also promoting “Addicted To Acoustic” through a series of mall shows where fans from practically all walks of life have easier access. She’d be performing backed up by the band Milkfish today, Sept. 19 (SM Marilao), 25 (The Podium, Ortigas) and 27 (The Block, SM North Edsa). Next month on the 16th she’d be at Gateway Mall in Cubao.
Asked about how she’s dealing with the ongoing ladies’ acoustic showdown which has the likes of Aiza Seguerra, Sabrina, and Amara sharing the airwaves with her, Princess pointed out that she’s seeing the matter as more of benefiting all of them. “I don’t see it as a competition but rather something to be feel excited about. It’s a healthy thing that we’re all doing something to promote acoustic music.”
Filipino music aficionados are often caught by fads. But then are thrilled about having a selection of artists to quench their thirst for a particular prevailing flavor or style. They know who to drop and keep from their list.
With her album’s good buys and widening fan acceptance, it seems that the crowning of a princess has already taken place.
