Marian backs Noynoy
Top rival networks ABS-CBN and GMA 7 have virtually united for the 2010 candidacy of Senator Benigno “Noynoy’’ Aquino III, standard-bearer of Liberal Party (LP) following endorsement from GMA contract star Marian Rivera and possibly Dingdong Dantes.
Kris Aquino, sister of the LP standard-bearer, revealed this following a meeting with Philippine Entertainment Portal (PEP) editor-in-chief Jo-Ann Maglipon on September 24, 2009, in which she said that Rivera, star of GMA-7 “Darna,’’ has volunteered to endorse Noynoy for president.
She told PEP that she it was her plan to approach some of the big stars of GMA to help campaign for her brother. Kris added that she has approached long-time friend talent manager Popoy Caritativo, Marian’s manager, for her plan.
But without being asked, Rivera volunteered to support the candidacy of Noynoy. “You know, hindi ko prinesyur at all si Marian. Hindi ko binanggit ‘yung idea kung puwede siyang mag-endorse kay Noynoy,” Caritativo told Kris.
Rivera reportedly told Caritativo: “Popoy, kay Noynoy tayo, ha. Dito tayo kay Noynoy... Kuya Noynoy ko na rin 'yan, dun tayo pupunta.”
The Darna star also said she believes in former President Corazon Aquino, mother of Kris and Noynoy, who passed away last month. “Hindi lang dahil kay Ate Kris kaya ko ginagawa ito. Dahil din ito sa nanay niya [former President Cory Aquino]. Kasi naniniwala talaga kami kay Cory.”
PEP said that Kris wanted to invite Rivera to dinner to encourage her to support her brother Noynoy and explain his platform. But the talent manager said, “No need.’’
“This is really genuine friendship, hindi ba? You know that si Marian, when she's on your side, she's really on your side. Biro mo, yung millions na tinanggihan niya. Kasi, mga dalawa na ang lumapit na gustong maging presidente kay Marian. Tapos ang sabi nga nila, 'Hindi, we are all really committed to another candidate,” said Kris.
PEP, the official website of Yes! magazine, also said that the Aquino family would like to tap Rivera’s boyfriend Dingdong Dantes to be the youth’s spokesman in Noynoy’s campaign.
So far, Dantes and the Aquino family have not discussed the plan.
Rivera, who shot to fame with the remake of “Marimar’’ telenovela, is the country’s third biggest celebrity endorser for 2008, according to Yes! magazine, with 25 tri-media endorsements. Her current telenovela “Darna’’ is one of the highest rating shows in primetime TV these days.
