Letran came charging while San Sebastian displayed its worst form and the Knights stopped the Stags’ 15-game winning run with an 80-63 rout in their 85th NCAA basketball tournament duel on Friday at The Arena in San Juan City.

The Knights, seeking to end a four-year title drought, found a way to limit the Stags to their lowest output of the season while RJ Jazul and Rey Guevarra provided the impact points in a fourth quarter breakaway.

The win improved Letran’s record 12-5 but remained in fourth position while the Stags, who threw away the chance to become outright finalists, kept th top spot at 15-1.

“There’s nothing really different in our preparations. We had the same preparation. I just told them na we should make a statement because we will be up against the best team in the league,” said Letran mentor Louie Alas.

After the Stags trimmed a 14-point lead to seven, 49-42, late in the third quarter, Jazul and Guevarra presided over a torrid fourth quarter, combining for 13 points to push Letran to a 66-49 lead with under four minutes left.

This, the Stags failed to overcome as the Knights seemingly have everything going their way exemplified by Kevin Alas, the coach’s son, making an amazing shot while he was sitting on the floor.

Earlier, Arellano University held Perpetual Help scoreless in the final minute to hammer out a 75-70 decision and snap a five-game losing slide.

In juniors action, Letran moved a win short of completing an 18-game sweep of the elims by humbling four-time defending champion San Sebastian, 81-73.
