Floods cause nightmare in southern Metro
Floods caused by tropical storm “Ondoy” were like a never-ending nightmare for those residing in the southern part of Metro Manila.
Muntinlupa City Mayor Aldrin San Pedro said that some eight barangays in the Baybay-Dagat area have become inundated as of 1 p.m. Saturday due to heavy downpour, which began the previous night.
San Pedro noted that the area was near the bay and therefore was easily flooded. “There are a lot of families living there and we’ve evacuated them,” he said.
The mayor also confirmed earlier reports that three children playing along the shoreline in Barangay Sucat were “washed away” by the flood and have been missing. “Our rescue teams, along with those from the coast guard are now looking for the children.”
Floodwater on the national road in Barangay Tunasan near the Muntinlupa City Hall reached at least one and a half meters high, making it impassable for all types of vehicles.
Over in Pateros, practically the entire town was covered with dark floodwater because of the continuous rains. In response, the municipal government opened every government installation and office to the public to serve as evacuation areas.
“Right now we have around 1,000 families at evacuation centers,” Mayor Joey Medina said. “Our social welfare service is in full force. The police and fire department are conducting rounds together to make sure that everyone is safe.”
Meanwhile, neck-high floods were reported at around 2 p.m. in Barangay San Isidro in Makati City, something that local officials there cited as “unprecedented.” Floodwater reached chest-level at Marconi and Edison Streets in Barangay San Isidro, reports added.
Elsewhere, bungalows reportedly “sunk” under floodwater in Libis Street in Taguig City, forcing residents to climb up to their roofs and wait for rescuers.
The scene was the same in Sitio 3, Barangay Sto. Niño, Fort Bonifacio, also in Taguig. However, the residents’ problems were compounded by the reported collapse of a large concrete wall, which made the area much harder to reach for authoriites.
Senior Supt. Camilo Cascolan, Taguig polcie chief, said that at least 50 families have been evecuated from Barangays Ususan and Tipas.
