Pacquiao sparmates arrive
Shawn Porter and Urbano Antillon blew into town on Sunday from the US, both expressing they are raring to test the mettle of pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao in sparring.
Porter and his father Ken and Antillon arrived on board a Philippine Airlines flight from Los Angeles and they were met at the airport by movie bad guy Cris Aguilar, who turned out to be agood guy after braving the floods and picking up the trio.
Aguilar used to do bodyguard chores for Pacquiao and he never hesitated when asked if he was willing to get the visitors at the airport even though he normally reports for work at 8 a.m.
“Just give my regards to Manny,” was all Aguilar could say to this writer who helped the Porters and Antillon find a temporary shelter until they are driven this morning to Baguio, site of Pacquiao’s training camp for the November 14 showdown with Miguel Cotto.
Porter, 21 years of age and unbeaten in 10 fights with eight knockouts, is said to be a Cotto clone.
An alternate on the US team to the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Porter is coming off a first-round knockout of Lamar Harris in Mississippi, last month.
“We’re ready to go,” said Porter, the 2007 US National Golden Gloves middleweight champion who was handpicked by Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach owing the similarity of his fighting style to Cotto.
Ken Porter said his son should weigh at least 160 lbs after all the travelling that they did starting from Cleveland, Ohio.
Antillon also didn’t mind being asked to get in the ring and slug with Pacquiao since Roach wants sparring to kick off as early as Tuesday.
“That’s why we are here and that’s what we’re paid to do here,” said Antillon, who has a 26-1 card with 19 knockouts.
