Pasig mayor promises aid to ‘Ondoy’ victims
Pasig City Mayor Bobby Eusebio assured on Tuesday that the local government is doing everything it can to help residents affected by tropical storm “Ondoy” which battered the city and other localities in Metro Manila and surrounding towns over the weekend.
In a press statement, Eusebio said many roads in Pasig City remain submerged in floodwater and filled with debris, hampering the delivery of relief goods to hundreds of people who were displaced due to “Ondoy.” He added that many areas in Pasig City are still in dire need of assistance.
“Pinapangako namin sa aming constituents na lahat ay gagawin namin. Hindi lang namin mabigla ng sabay-sabay dahil iyong mga rescuers natin sinisiguro rin natin na safe rin sila. Dahil sila rin naman iyong pupunta sa ibang barangay,” Eusebio said.
Initial reports he received showed that two people died in Rosario, four in Santolan, and two in Pinagbuhatan. He added that some 2,000 residents from 10 barangays have already been evacuated to safer grounds.
"There are several people missing but we don't have the exact figures or their locations so we can verify," he said.
Eusebio assured that the delivery of relief goods and medicine to the evacuation centers is ongoing as well as the clearing operations to make roads passable again.
He said the evacuees need bottles of water, bread, noodles and used clothes, among others.
He said the donated goods are temporarily stored in Eusebio High School before these are delivered to the Ondoy victims in his city. He is calling on volunteers and non-government organizations to help deliver these goods.
“May mga ibang ayaw ng umalis. Hindi na nila gustong magpalikas. Iyong iba nag-aantay na lang ng rescuer na magdadala ng pagkain,” he said.
Eusebio said those who are in need of assistance may send him a text message to his cellphone number 09189275074.
As this developed, the city government announced the suspension of classes in the city for one week because of the devastation brought by “Ondoy.”
Lolet Austria, executive assistant to the Office of the City Mayor, said Eusebio has ordered the cancellation of classes in public elementary and high schools in the city even as Pasigueños continue to feel the effects of “Ondoy.”
Austria, at the same time, said school officials are advised by the city mayor to open their respective schools for evacuation and relief operation as the number of flood victims continue to swell.
